What should I do when my child hits?

Hitting is communication gone wrong. Your goal is to protect everyone and teach safer ways to express anger.

What to do, step by step:

  1. Block the hit calmly.
Hold their hands gently but firmly and say, “I won’t let you hit.”
  2. Stay close, not punitive.
“You’re angry. I’m here to help you stay safe.”
  3. Guide expression.
“You can stomp, squeeze a pillow, or draw your mad.”
  4. Reflect afterward.
“Next time you’re mad, what can you do instead of hitting?”
