Does screen time always end in tears?

When it’s time to turn off the tablet or TV, the meltdown often feels unavoidable. But the secret isn’t less screen time—it’s smoother transitions. Kids struggle when changes feel sudden or forced.

What to do, step by step:

  1. Set a clear limit ahead of time.
Say, “You can watch one show, then we’ll turn it off.”
Kids do better when they know what to expect.
  2. Use a timer they can see.
Set a 5-minute visual timer or give a verbal countdown: “Five more minutes, then we turn it off.”
  3. Warn with warmth.
Sit next to them for the last minute and say, “This show is almost done. What should we do next?”
  4. Offer a fun next activity.
Have a follow-up plan like “Let’s draw your favorite character!” or “Snack time next!”
  5. Stay calm during resistance.
If they cry or yell, say softly, “It’s hard to stop something fun. I get it. Let’s take a deep breath together.”
  6. Praise cooperation.
“You turned it off even though it was hard. That shows self-control.”
