How do I stop power struggles?

Power struggles happen when kids feel out of control. Give them some power within limits.

What to do, step by step:

  1. Offer choices.
“Do you want to brush teeth before or after PJs?”
  2. Use routines, not threats.
“After we clean up, we read a story.”
  3. Keep calm tone.
Don’t match defiance—match firmness with kindness.
  4. Let natural consequences teach.
“If we don’t clean up, the toys might get lost.”
  5. End with connection.
Hug, smile, or laugh to reset the bond.
